This detailed panorama view depicts the port of Kagoshima in Southwestern Kyushu. Viewed from the sea it includes sampans and barges in the foreground with the city laid out on the hillsides behind.
Kagoshima was the landing-place of Jesuit St. Francis Xavier in 1549 and an important base for the early Jesuit missionaries to Japan. It was also one of the bases of the powerful Satsuma clan.
