This is an extremely scarce map that depicts the Americas noting the colonial possessions and recent exploratory routes. The new United States is shown with borders extending to the Mississippi, following the Treaty of Paris. Very little is known about the northwest coast of North America and most of the interior is blank.
Quivera is labeled in the otherwise blank western region. It was a city described to Coronado as “rich in gold with lordly rulers” that continued to appear on maps throughout the 18th century - spawning the imagination of the map-reader and explorer. Numerous exploratory routes are shown and dated including those of Cook, Bougainville, Biron and Clarke.
Detailed informative text flanks the map. The left panel relates to North America, and the right to South America, listing possessions by country with principle divisions and islands.
