''TEXAS.'' Baltimore: Stedman, Brown & Lyon, c. 1873.  Lithographed map with original hand-coloring.(Image: 12 1/2 x 16 1/2’’)Toning throughout with closed tears in margin.

This detailed map depicts Texas with counties named and in contrasting colors. Several of the earlier formed counties contain the year they were established.

Stephens County (North Texas) was originally called Buchanan County until 1861 – the name Buchanan is still visible with no hint of “Stephens”.

Topographical features are shown with major cities, towns, mountains and waterways identified. Railroads and wagon roads are shown (U.S. Mail Route, Wagon Route, Santa Fe Road…). Indian Tribes are located in the western portion of the state (Comanche, Lipan, “Kioways”…).  The inset, lower left, depicts the ''Northern Part of Texas''.

Of particular interest is the notation placed inside of controversial Greer County - marked on this map as ''Disputed GREER Territory''. (Dispute over who actually owned this area continued even after 1896 when the Supreme Court ruled that the county was not under Texas jurisdiction).
