This very historical map has a decorative title cartouche and coat-of arms. It depicts the British Colonies in North America with insets of Bermuda, Barbados, the Carolinas, Jamaica and Nova Scotia. Numerous cities, towns, and waterways are located throughout. It is one of the earliest obtainable folio size English language maps of New England and the Northeast.
Issued in 1701 by Edward Wells (mathematician and professor of geography at Oxford). , the map is dedicated to William, Duke of Gloucester, who was then a student of geography at Oxford. Unfortunately the Duke died in July of the same year (at 11 years of age). The maps from this atlas, which were printed at the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford, were highly regarded for their accuracy and aesthetic appeal.
