''OKLAHOMA AND INDIAN TERS.'' Chicago: George F. Cram, c.1898.  From the Standard American Railroad System Atlas. Color-printed map with original color.(Image: 16 1/8 x 22 3/4'')

This highly detailed railroad map depicts Oklahoma Territory and Indian Territory with the counties/Indian Nations named and in outline color. The Five Civilized Tribes are located (Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Chickasaw and Choctaw).  Other tribes subsequently removed to the Indian Territory are also shown. The table in the upper left is a key for identifying the different railroads.  Topographical features are well noted, with major towns, cities, and water routes identified.

Of particular interest: the capital of Oklahoma Territory in 1898 was Guthrie. It was officially changed to Oklahoma City in 1911 after a controversial midnight move by citizens of Oklahoma City.

''The Indian Territory was never an organized territory, but was set aside as a home for the Five Civilized Tribes, who were removed to it in the period 1820-45…Lands were held in common and each tribe had its own government.'' (Scribner’s: Dictionary of American History, p.109).
