(155 x 105mm – 6 x 4 1/8’’) Original leaf from a medieval manuscript Book of Hours. 15 lines of red-ruled text written in Latin, on animal vellum in dark brown ink with rubrics in red. 

Two two-line illuminated initials and eight one-line illuminated initials, and six illuminated line-extenders in burnished gold on red and blue ground with delicate white tracery. Borders are illuminated in a delicate rinceaux floral design in blue, red, green, & burnished gold.                               

France (Paris), c. 1460.

The two-line illuminated “A” begins Psalm 119 (King James 120) complete: “Ad dominum…” (In my trouble I cried to the Lord: and he heard me. O Lord, deliver my soul from wicked lips, and a deceitful tongue. What shall be given to thee, or what shall be added to thee, to a deceitful tongue? The sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals that lay waste…). 

The two-line illuminated “L” begins Psalm 120 (KJ 121) 1-2: “Levavi…” (I have lifted up my eyes to the mountains, from whence help shall come to me.  My help is from the Lord who made heaven and earth. May he not suffer thy foot to be moved: neither let him slumber that keepeth thee).
