$0.00

An English manuscript legal document executed by hand in dark brown ink on animal parchment, written in English.

Size: 27 x 32.75 inches.

This impressive document is an exemplification for  “sale by recovery” of a tract of land consisting of six acres of meadow and six acres of pasture in Thurnham, Kent. The demand was made by Daniel Simpson of John Howard (gentlemen) and vouched by John Legg.

The matter was heard “…at Westminster before Sir Charles Pratt, Knight and his Brethren our Justices…”  Pratt (1714-1794) was the Chief Justice of the Common Pleas and later Lord Chancellor of England. He was a confidant of Pitt the Elder, supporting him in the controversies over John Wilkes and American Independence.

The document is embellished by a large engraved heading with the portrait of King George III and heraldic devices, including a crowned Lion and a unicorn. It is dated 22nd June, third year of the reign of George III (1763), and retains a large wax seal on its original tab.

An elaborate document in elegant and legible court/chancery departmental calligraphy. In fine condition with seal and blue tax stamps . Folded for filing as usual, and with some loss and cracking to the seal.
