Original leaf from a medieval manuscript Psalter-Hours. 15 lines, written in Latin on animal vellum in precise elegant rounded Gothic script in dark brown ink with rubrics in red.  (100 x 78mm – 3 3/8 x 3’’)

Northern France or Flanders, c. 1280-1300 AD.

One large historiated illuminated “D” (verso) depicting The Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary, hands raised, and John the Evangelist. Both are shown standing beneath the crucified Christ. Elaborate extensions into the border in blue, pink, burnished gold and delicate white penwork with a rabbit, lion blowing a horn, and a bird resting on a leaf. 

The rubrics (recto) note the beginning of the Hour of the Passion of our Lord. The two-line illuminated “D” begins:  “Domine…” (Thou O Lord wilt open my lips. And my mouth shall declare thy praise.

The historiated illuminated “D” (verso) begins:  “Deus in adiutorium…” (Incline unto my aid O God. O Lord make haste to help me…In the Lord’s atoning Grief Be our rest and sweet relief; Store we deep in heart’s recess All the shame and bitterness. Thorns, and Cross, and nails, and lance, Wounds, our treasure that enhance…).

Vellum patch (recto) over “sewn” natural defect in upper margin above miniature – not affecting text or illumination.
