Six one-line illuminated initials and four line extenders in burnished gold on a red and blue ground with delicate white penwork.

Origin:  Paris, France circa 1500.

Size:  110 x 75mm – 4.25 x 2.9 inches, from a diminutive manuscript likely written for a lady.

The one-line illuminated “I” begins Psalm 62 (King James 63) 10-12:  “Ipsi vero…” (But they have sought my soul in vain, they shall go into the lower parts of the earth: They shall be delivered into the hands of the sword, they shall be the portions of foxes. But the king shall rejoice in God, all they shall be praised that swear by him: because the mouth is stopped of them that speak wicked things).

The one-line illuminated “D” begins Psalm 66 (KJ 67) 1-5: “Deus misereatur…” (May God have mercy on us, and bless us: may he cause the light of his countenance to shine upon us, and may he have mercy on us.  That we may know thy way upon earth: thy salvation in all nations. Let people confess to thee, O God: let all people give praise to thee. Let the nations be glad and rejoice).
