c 1500 Book of Hours - Two Continuous Leaves - Latin & French

Two original consecutive leaves from a French medieval illuminated manuscript Book of Hours. 13 and 19 lines of hand-ruled text  with dark brown ink in fine lettre bâtarde script on animal vellum. An added manuscript prayer in French follows beneath the original five lines of Latin.

Origin:  Paris, France circa 1500.

Size of each leaf:  110 x 75mm – 4.25 x 2.9 inches, from a diminutive manuscript likely written for a lady.              

This leaf begins with the conclusion to a prayer:  “per te jesu…” (Through Thee, Jesus Christ, Savior of the world, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit, livest and reignest, forever and ever). The added manuscript French prayer begins: “Orayson devote de nostre seigneur…” (A prayer of devotion to our Lord).

Provenance:   ex-collection of Brooklyn Museum of Art, acquired in 1919.  Deaccessioned and sold to support the museum collection.
