This famous early image of a magnificent rhinoceros is an original woodcut by David Kandel  (1520?-1592) after Albrecht Dürer’s  (1471-1528) drawing. From the German edition of Sebastian Münster’s Cosmography, titled Cosmographey oder beschreibung aller Länder, first published by Heinrich Petri in Basel, c. 1550. 

Printed by Heinrich Petri (fl. C. 1527-77), published in a German edition of Sebastian Münster’s (1488-1552) “Cosmographia” published 1550-1628.

The woodcut was executed by David Kandel – one of the principal engravers of Münster’s maps.  His monogram (entwined letter “DK” appear under the rhino’s belly).  Another woodcut depicting a war elephant with several figures of soldiers by an anonymous artist is at the upper corner of the sheet.

Condition:  well-printed impression with full margins as published. Some staining & toning, and three marginal old paper repairs are evident well away from the print block.
