In purpose and format, printed Books of Hours followed the older manuscript examples. The more luxurious were printed on vellum.

The two-line illuminated “E” begins Psalm 44 (King James 45) complete: “Eructavit cor meum…” (My heart hath uttered a good word: I speak my works to the king: My tongue is the pen of a scrivener that writeth swiftly. Thou art beautiful above the sons of men: grace is poured abroad in thy lips; therefore hath God blessed thee forever.  Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O thou most mighty…They shall remember thy name throughout all generations. Therefore shall people praise thee forever; yean, forever and ever).

The two-line illuminated “D” begins Psalm 45 (KJ 46) 1-5: “Deus noster…” (Our God is our refuge and strength: a helper in troubles, which have found us exceedingly.  Therefore we will not fear, when the earth shall be troubled; and the mountains shall be removed into the heart of the sea…).
