Medieval Breviary Leaf - Prayer for Peace

$0.00

Original leaf from a medieval manuscript Breviary. 17 lines of ruled gothic textura script, written in Latin with black ink, on animal vellum. Rubrics (headings) & versal initials in red.  (123 x 85mm).

One three-line illuminated initial,  one two-line illuminated initial and numerous one-line illuminated initials alternating in red and deep blue - with the guide letters visible in most.

Northern Germany or Netherlands, c. 1425.

The two-line illuminated ''D'' begins a prayer for peace:  ''Deus a quo...'' (O God, from whom proceed all holy desires, all right counsels and just works; grant unto us Thy servants that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be devoted to Thy commands, and that, being delivered from the fear of our enemies, we may pass our time in peace under Thy protection. Through Christ our Lord).

The text (verso) begins the Commemoration of Saints Peter & Paul: ''Gloriosi...'' (As the glorious princes of the earth loved each other in life, in death they were not divided).

A Breviary is composed of many books (prayers, hymns, psalms...) painstakingly but carefully written by hand, and used by monks and priests to conduct their daily services.
