c 1854 Native American Hunting Buffalo - Mckenney & Hall

$0.00

Exceptionally fine stone lithograph with beautiful original hand-coloring from the royal octavo edition of The History of the Indian Tribes of North America by James Hall and Thomas McKenney. (Paper size: 6 3/8 x 10.5 inches - Image size:  5.25 x 8.5").

Published in Philadelphia, c. 1850-1854 by Rice and Hart, and lithographed by J. T. Bowen - the finest lithographer of the period.

The dramatic scene depicts a Native American in elaborate buckskin outfit and feather headdress aiming bow and arrow at wounded buffalo he pursues on horseback; in the background is another group of Native Americans chasing and attacking a herd, all set within a landscape of lake surrounded by hills.

This was the frontis for volume II after a painting by Peter Rindisbacher(1806-34).  Rindisbacher was a “very important 1820’s watercolor painter of Indians and frontier life in Canada and US, the first pioneer artist recording genre of Western Indians”. He died at the young age of 28 when he was just “beginning to achieve national recognition” (Samuels, Ency. Of Artists in the American West).

As seen in the second photo, the third line of the imprint was partially cropped.

Presented in an archival 11 x 14'' mat
