Original leaf from a dated German manuscript Prayer book.  14 lines of text, written in German with dark brown ink - numerous initials heightened with gold and/or silver - in fine Gothic script, on animal vellum. (117 x 88mm - 4 5/8 x 3 1/2'').

The title page notes that this Prayer Book was scribed by Johann Naevium (Naeve) in the year 1603!

Very unusual and decorative borders in an intricate geometric and floral design in gold, silver, red, green and gold.

The large illuminated “A” begins the first of the Seven Penitential Psalms – Psalm 6:1-7: “Ach herr straffe mich…” (O Lord, rebuke me not in thy indignation, nor chastise me in thy wrath. Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am weak:  heal me, O Lord…).

Prayer books contain a collection of prayers for private devotional use. They grew in popularity throughout the middle ages – supplementing the Psalter and Books of Hours for devotional use.
