Garden of Gethsemane - c 1510 Printed Book of Hours Leaf

$0.00

Original leaf from an early printed  Book of Hours on vellum. Latin and French text in black on animal vellum. (170 x 108mm - 6.8 x 4.3").  Printed by Thielman Kerver Paris, (Use of Rome), c. 1510.

Noted for its DECORATIVE BORDERS - the text panel surrounds were designed by the Master of Anne de Bretagne. The surrounds on recto include scenes from the Old Testament story of Joseph and his brothers.

The fine nearly full-page miniature on the verso was designed by the Master Jean Pichore. It dramatically depicts the Garden of Gethsemane, the opening for the HOURS OF THE PASSION OF CHRIST. Judas is shown planting the Kiss of Betrayal on Christ’s cheek while Peter raises his sword to cut off the ear of Malchus – the high priest’s servant.

The text on recto is from Mark 16:16-20: ''Qui crediderit…'' (He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved: but he that believeth not shall be condemned. And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name they shall cast out devils: they shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents; and if they shall drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them: they shall lay their hands upon the sick, and they shall recover. And the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God…).

A fine crisp impression, notably exhibiting the designs of two late Medieval masters.
