$0.00

Original leaf with woodcut illustration from the Bible in Latin (Biblia Latina) produced for Anton Koberger of Nuremberg. Printed by J. Sacon of Lyon in 1521. Reference: Darlow and Moule #6101. (330 x 245mm – 13 x 9 ½’’)

Koberger was the leading German publisher of his day - known particularly for the Nuremberg Chronicle.  He was also Albrecht Dürer’s Godfather – providing Dürer with his early training!

The text for this leaf is nicely printed in gothic letter in two columns. Rubricating and underlining are executed by hand in red ink. Five four-line woodcut initials surrounded by a floral design; one large historiated initial depicting the Book of Ecclesiasticus (King James Sirach) being translated from Hebrew to Greek.   Ecclesiasticus was written by Jesus, son of Sirach of Jerusalem in Hebrew nearly 200 years before the birth of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.  The author’s grandson, also named Jesus, translated the Ecclesiasticus from Hebrew to Greek.

This leaf contains text from Ecclesiasticus 19:6 – 24:4  “Qui peccat…” (He that sinneth against his own soul, shall repent…Hast thou heard a word against thy neighbor? Let it die within thee…A wise man will hold his peace til he see opportunity: but a babbler, and a fool, will regard no time…A man wise in words shall make himself beloved: but the graces of fools shall be poured out…He that keepeth justice shall get the understanding thereof. The perfection of the fear of God is wisdom and understanding…).
