$0.00

Original printed document completed in manuscript - issued by the Baltimore Equitable Society to Henry Didier.  (19 1/8 x 15 ¼’’) 1 September 1801

The insurance covers Didier’s dwelling in the amount of Thirteen Hundred Thirty Three dollars and thirty-three cents. Signed at Baltimore, Maryland by the Secretary of the Society Joseph Townsend and dated 1 September 1801. It also bears a vignette of the Society building, the embossed seal of the company and the official very scarce embossed tax stamp Scott RM267C ( only 67 examples known to the Coombs Survey).

Henry Didier (born France 1747, immigrated to America 1775, died 1822) was a prosperous Baltimore merchant. His son Henry Didier, Jr. of the well-known firm D’Arcy and Didier, amassed a fortune during the War of 1812 privateering with the famous Baltimore Clippers.

Joseph Townsend (1756-1841) Started the Friends School of Baltimore in 1784—the first teacher in school history. Founded the Baltimore Equitable Society in 1794, and was elected to The Ancient and Honorable Mechanical Company of Baltimore in 1805.

The Baltimore Equitable Society has been in the Fire Insurance business since 1794. Their well-know fire mark of two clasped hands is on the embossed seal on this document. The bulk of the BES archives were donated to the Maryland Historical Society’s H. Furlong Baldwin Library.
