Swan-Handled Solver Spoon, Ancient Roman c. 4th Cent AD

$0.00

Swan-Handled Silver Spoon - Ancient Roman, Circa 4th Century AD

A very unusual example of a rare ancient Roman silver spoon. It is extremely well crafted, with a hammered heavy teardrop bowl and a reverted handle in the form of a swan’s neck and head.

Excellent state of preservation, with toned surface.

For reference see Richard Hattatt, “Ancient Brooches and other Artifacts, vol 4, figure 129. The virtually identical spoon pictured there is of silver plated bronze. It was found in an excavation in Roman London at “The Poultry” in 1928.

Eating utensils were uncommon in the Roman society – most foods were prepared so they might be eaten with bare hands, though knives and spoons were sometimes employed; forks are excessively rare.
