$0.00

Very detailed pictorial letter-sheet lithograph, in excellent condition, depicting “CLEVELAND” as it appeared in 1850. Engraving with original hand-coloring. Image size: 4 1/2 x 7 5/8''.

Published in New York, c. 1850-60’s by Charles Magnus - best known today for the colorful city views, patriotic envelopes and letter sheets he issued “...colored to a degree of perfection unsurpassed at the time and since...” (Raymond Marsh: The American Philatelist, p. 973). “Because postage rates before 1845 were predicated upon the number of pages in a letter and the distance the letter was sent, letter-sheets were an attractive solution to reduction of postage costs”. (Fowble: Two Centuries of Prints in America).  Many of these sheets could be folded several times & even into their own envelope - all for the price of one sheet.

Presented in an archival 11 x 14'' mat
