$0.00

“COUNTY MAP OF VIRGINIA, and NORTH CAROLINA”  Philadelphia:  S. Augustus Mitchell, Jr., c. 1862.  Dated 1860 at the bottom, but published in Mitchell’s New General Atlas, 1862 edition. Original map with unusually bright hand-coloring.(Image: 11x13’’)  Unlisted in Tar Heel Maps.

This map, with its highly decorative border, depicts Virginia and North Carolina with their counties in contrasting colors.  Topographical features are shown with major towns, cities, mountains, rail routes, land routes and water routes identified.

North Carolina University (Chapel Hill),  “Gold Mines” (near Mt. Pleasant, NC), and the University of Virginia (Charlottesville) are located.   A very detailed view of the states as they existed when the country was engaged in the Civil War.

North Carolina is rarely seen in conjunction with Virginia in American atlas maps. Mitchell reverted to the more common combination of North and South Carolina in the next (1863) edition.
