Original leaf from the Latin text FIRST EDITION of the Nuremberg Chronicle - a history of the world profusely illustrated with woodcuts by two distinguished artists: Michael Wolgemut (Dürer’s master) and Wilhelm Pleydenwurf.

Printed & published in Nuremberg, Germany July 12 1493 by Anton Koberger. (445x290mm – 17.5 x 11.5”).

The large woodcut in contemporary original hand color depicts Adam & Eve with Cain and Abel after expulsion from the Garden of Eden (illustrated: A. Thomas “Great Books and Collectors”, p 54). On the verso is the beginning of an illustrated genealogical chart from Adam to Christ, including a vignette of Cain slaying Abel.

The Nuremberg Chronicle was one of the most remarkable books of its time, with woodcuts illustrating the Bible, ecclesiastical & other history, topography, maps & views of towns. As  an incunabula it is among the earliest illustrated printings - published within 50 years of the Gutenberg Bible.
