Original leaf from a manuscript Spanish Antiphonal on animal parchment.  The manuscript text and music (six lines of music on a five-line stave) were beautifully executed by hand over 400 years ago!!!  (495 x 365mm – 19 1/2 x 14 3/8’’) Upper right margin reinforced with old tape.

Spain, c. 1550-1600 –this Choirbook once belonged to the Church of San Miguel, Pinã de Campos in Palencia, and was likely scribed there.

One illuminated initial in red surrounded by violet penwork.

The illuminated ''D'' begins part of Psalm 20 (King James 21) 3-4:   ''Desiderium...'' (Thou hast given him his heart's desire: and hast not withholden from him the will of his lips.  Thou hast set on his head a crown of precious stones).

Antiphonals contain chants for the canonical hours of the Divine Office: first vespers or the vigil of great feasts, matins, lauds, prime, terce, sext, none, vespers and compline.
