The two-line illuminated “C” begins:  “Conscientias…” (Visit, we beseech thee, O Lord, and purify our hearts by thy grace: that when our Lord Jesus Christ thy Son shall come, together with all his saints, he may find us ready to give him a place within us…).

The one-line illuminated “C” opens the Hour of Compline: “Converte…” (Convert us O God our savior. And avert thine ire from us…).

The two-line illuminated “E” begins part of Isaiah 7:14-15: “Ecce…” (Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel. He shall eat butter and honey, that he may know to refuse the evil, and to choose the good).

The two-line illuminated “M” begins the Annunciation from Luke 1:26-28: “Missus…” (The Angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.
