Original continuous bifolium leaves (two leaves – four pages) from a medieval illuminated manuscript Book of Hours. 14 lines of hand-ruled text written in Italian and Latin with dark brown and red ink in fine Gothic script on animal vellum. One two-line illuminated initial in red and one paraph illuminated in blue.                                    

Origin:  Italy circa 1440.

Size (each leaf):  90 x 63mm – 3 ½ x 2 ½ inches, from a diminutive manuscript likely written for a lady.

Page one continues the prayer: “[Pretende Domine et] famulis et famulabus tuis dexter…” (Extend, O Lord, over Thy servants and handmaidens, the right hand of Thy heavenly aid, that they may draw near unto Thee with all their heart, and worthily obtain their petitions).

The blue paraph notes the rubric of a prayer of Saint Gregory written in Italian
