 Original leaf from a medieval manuscript Book of Hours. 16 lines of ruled text, ruled in red, written in Latin with dark brown ink in gothic script on animal vellum.(162x125mm – 6 3/8 x 5’’)

One illuminated two-line initial and eleven illuminated one-line initials in burnished gold on a red and blue ground with delicate white penwork. The panel borders (both sides) contain a highly decorative floral design with flowers, berries and acanthus leaves in blue, red, green, pink, burnished and brushed gold.

The one-line illuminated “I” begins Psalm 18 (King James 19): 9-15: “Iustitie…” (The justices of the Lord are right, rejoicing hearts: the commandment of the Lord is lightsome, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is holy, enduring forever and ever: the judgements of the Lord are true, justified in themselves…).

The two-line illuminated “D” begins Psalm 23(KJ 24) 1-4: “Domini es terra…” (The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof: the world, and all they that dwell therein.  For he hath founded it upon the seas; and hath prepared it upon the rivers. Who shall ascend onto the mountain of the Lord: or who shall stand in his holy place?...).
