Rubricated chapter numbers, initials and marginalia in red and blue. 59 lines of text in double columns (14 lines per inch!).
Italy, (Probably Bologna), c. AD 1250-75.
Four large initials alternating in blue with red penwork and red with blue penwork & extending into the margins.
One seven-line illuminated initial containing a miniature of Jeremiah and the boiling cauldron.
The third line begins text from Isaiah 65:13 – Isaiah 66:24: ''Propter hoc…'' (Therefore thus saith the Lord God: Behold my servants shall eat……).
The historiated initial opens Jeremiah 1:1-18: ''Verba hieremiae…'' (The words of Jeremiah the son of Helcias…).
This leaf, from a ''portable'' Bible during the period of the Crusades, would have been used in the abstract study of theology or the preaching of the Gospel around the medieval countryside.
