c 1475 Book of Hours Leaf - The Crucifixion

$0.00

IM-13284: Original leaf from a Medieval illuminated manuscript Book of Hours on animal vellum. The arch-topped miniature is surrounded by a dense floral border in rich colors and burnished and liquid gold.

Leaf size is 178 x 128mm – 7 x 5 inches. Recto is blank.

Belgium, probably Bruges,  c. 1475.

The exceptional illuminated miniature painting depicts the Crucifixion: “INRI” on white plaque atop the cross, Christ frontal with head leaning on his right shoulder and blood dripping from wounds; Virgin Mary stands beneath her son on his right with her hands clasped in prayer looking downward on the stone strewn ground while John the Evangelist stands on the other side looking upward at Christ. In the background are hills and fortifications, and a harbor town with vessels on the waterway.

The beautiful miniature painting is similar to works associated with Willem Vrelant, a noted artist working in Bruges 1454-81.

A sister leaf from the same manuscript is pictured and described in the Schuster Gallery 1987 catalog “Illuminated Manuscripts”, number 34.

It is an appealing and elegant image of the Crucifixion, in nice condition with very little devotional wear.

Shipped unmatted.
