Origin: Flanders, circa 1475.
Size: 90 x 67mm – 3 ½ x 2 5/8 inches, from a diminutive manuscript likely written for a lady.
Line one begins: et baslamum…” (And aromatical balm, as chosen myrrh have I given the sweetness of odor. But thou O Lord have mercy on us. Thanks be to God. Verily thou art happy o sacred Virgin Mary, and most worthy of all praise: Because Christ our God the sun of righteousness is sprung from thee…).
The two-line illuminated “T” begins the Te Deum – a fourth century hymn of joy and thanksgiving: “Te Deum…” (O God, we praise thee: we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. Everlasting Father, all the earth doth worship thee….).
