(160x100mm – 6.25 x 4’’) Original leaf from a medieval manuscript Book of Hours. 25 lines, of red-ruled Latin in dark brown ink, written in fine gothic script on animal vellum with rubrics in blue.

One two-line illuminated initial in sepia and gold on a blue ground with white pen-work; one two-line illuminated initial in blue and white on sepia and gold ground; thirteen one-line illuminated initials and ten illuminated line-extenders (three in branch-like forms) in gold on alternating blue, red and sepia ground with gold highlights.           

France, c. 1460.

The two-line illuminated “U”” begins Psalm 12 (King James 13) complete: “Usquequo…” (How long, O Lord, wilt thou forget me unto the end? How long dost thou turn away thy face from me?...My heart shall rejoice in thy salvation: I will sing to the Lord, who giveth me good things: yea I will sing to the name of the Lord the most high).

The two-line illuminated “I” begins  Psalm 42 (KJ 43) 1-4: “Iudica mei…” (Judge me, O God, and distinguish my cause from the nation that is not holy: deliver me from the unjust and deceitful man. For thou art God my strength: why hast thou cast me off? And why do I go sorrowful whilst the enemy afflicteth me? Send forth thy light and thy truth: they have conducted me, and brought me unto thy holy hill, and into thy tabernacles……).
