IM-13592:  Original leaf from a medieval illuminated manuscript Book of Hours. 25 lines, of red-ruled Latin in dark brown ink, written in fine gothic script on animal vellum with rubrics in blue.

One two-line illuminated initial in blue and white on a red ground with gold pen-work; fifteen one-line illuminated initials and eleven illuminated line-extenders (five in branch-like forms) in gold on alternating blue, red and sepia ground with gold highlights.       

France, c. 1460.

Size: 160x100mm – 6.25 x 4 inches.

The two-line illuminated “D” begins Psalm 101 (King James 102) 1-16: “Domine …” (Hear, O Lord, my prayer: and let my cry come to thee. Turn not away thy face from me: in the day when I am in trouble, incline thy ear to me. In what day so ever I shall call upon thee, hear me speedily. For my days are vanished like smoke: and my bones are grown dry like fuel for the fire. I am smitten as grass, and my heart is withered: because I forgot to eat my bread…).

Psalm 101 (KJ 102) is the fifth Penitential Psalm.  Penitential Psalms are a group of 7 psalms considered appropriate for prayer during times of repentence.
