IM-13524: Original leaf from a medieval illuminated manuscript Book of Hours. 14 lines of hand-ruled text written in Latin with dark brown ink in fine Gothic script on animal vellum.
Embellished with a two-line illuminated initial in liquid gold on red ground with red penwork and a floral design into the margin in green, blue and gold and eight one-line illuminated initials in liquid gold on alternating red and blue ground.
Origin: Flanders ,circa 1475.
Size: 90 x 67mm – 3 ½ x 2 5/8 inches, from a diminutive manuscript likely written for a lady.
The two-line illuminated “D” begins Psalm 62 (King James 63) 1-8: “Deus deus…” (O God, my God, to thee do I watch at break of day. For thee my soul hath thirsted; for thee my flesh, O how many ways! In a desert land, and where there is no way, and no water: so in the sanctuary have I come before thee, to see thy power and thy glory. For thy mercy is better than lives: thee my lips shall praise. Thus will I bless thee all my life long: and in thy name I will lift up my hands. Let my soul be filled as with marrow and fatness: and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips. If I have remembered thee upon my bed, I will meditate on thee in the morning…).
