[TEXAS] - c 1898 - Rand, McNally & Co - Large map of Texas

$0.00

[TEXAS] New York: Rand, McNally & Co., c.1898 (copyright 1895 lower left).  Color-printed map with original color. (Image: 19 x 26’’)

This large attractive map depicts Texas in great detail! Rail routes are shown throughout the state with each stop noted. Counties are in contrasting colors, topographical features are shown & major land routes, and railroads, water routes, cities & towns are identified.

Of particular interest is the delineation of controversial Greer County - shown on this shaded in yellow , and inside the Oklahoma boundary.  Dispute over who actually owned this area continued even after 1896 when the Supreme Court ruled that the county was not under Texas jurisdiction).

Tom Green County is shown with a two-mile-wide gap left between Irion and Sterling counties, making Tom Green essentially tow counties, connected only by this channel.

Still on the map are Buchel and Foley counties which would be abolished in 1897 and made part of Brewster County.

Also depicted are major portions of New Mexico Territory and Indian Territory (with location of the various tribes well noted on the latter).
