This historical map depicts the Territories of Colorado (statehood 1876), Utah (statehood 1896), New Mexico & Arizona (both statehood 1912). Counties are named and in contrasting colors. Several railroads, wagon roads, mountain passes and waterways are located. Topographical features are shown and most major cities, towns, and military forts are identified. 

Indian tribes are also shown throughout the map. The "Massacre of Capt. Gunnison" (a West Point graduate & army engineer) is shown in Utah (Millard County), "Silver Mines" are noted in Summit County, Colorado, and "Silver Mines" & "Copper Mines" are noted in southern Arizona.
