“JOHNSON'S PALESTINE.” New York:  Johnson and Ward, c. 1864. (Image: 16 ½ x 12 ¼”)Lithographed map with original hand-coloring..

This map of the Holy Land depicts the region in great detail.  Topographical features are shown with major towns, cities, land routes and water routes identified. Many sites of ancient ruins are also noted.  Scripture, classical and “modern” names are differentiated.

The inset of “JERUSALEM” identifies several tombs, churches and mosques, locates the remains of the ancient city walls and “probable circuit of the ancient walls”.  Also provided is a vignette of the “City of Damascus”.  A very attractive view of the region as it was known in the 1860's.
