''JOHNSON’S CALIFORNIA TERRITORIES OF NEW MEXICO AND UTAH'' New York:  Johnson and Browning, c. 1860. Lithographed map with original hand-coloring. Archival repair to short separation of lower centerfold.(Image: 17 x 24 1/4’’)

This attractive and very historical map depicts the State of California and the Territories of Nevada (statehood 1864), Utah (statehood 1896), Colorado (statehood 1876).

New Mexico and Arizona (both admitted 1912)are in a very unusual HORIZONTAL configuration which existed very briefly. The Confederate Territory of Arizona appears in the southern third of New Mexico Territory. Between August 1861 - July 1862, the Confederate officer John R. Baylor appointed himself the Territorial Governor and claimed all of New Mexico Territory south of the 34th Parallel for the Confederacy.

A highly informative view of the developing Western Region as it was unfolding in the 1860's. Indian Tribes, gold regions, silver regions, and copper regions are located.  Also shown are the Pony Express Routes, existing and proposed rail routes, and comments regarding the terrain of many areas.

The map identifies the border determined by Gadsden Purchase and notes U.S. exploratory routes. The site where Capt. J. W Gunnison (a West Point graduate & army engineer) was ''killed by the Indians'' is shown in Utah Territory.
