''NORTH CAROLINA'' Baltimore:  Fielding Lucas, Jr., c. 1823 from A General Atlas…Fine engraved map with exceptional original hand-coloring. A scarce map! (Ref: Phillips #742; Tar Heel Maps, #18).(Image:  10 3/4 x 18 7/8'')

This beautifully detailed historical map shows North Carolina with its counties in contrasting colors in the early 1800’s. Topographical features are shown and major cities, towns, court houses, swamps (such as the “Dismal Swamp” “Holly Shelter Swamp” “Green Swamp”…), mountains, waterways, lighthouses, and land routes are identified. Also of interest the border between North Carolina and Tennessee which “is either inaccurate or has not finally been surveyed” (Tar Heel Maps).

Lucas was a prominent citizen of Baltimore best remembered for his important role in early American cartography. He established his own business in Baltimore in 1810 where he gained a reputation for consistently producing high quality maps - becoming one of the most important early American cartographers.
