“MEXICO or NEW SPAIN...”  London:  Thomas Kitchin, as published for The History of America by Dr. Robertson, 1777.  First Edition, dated 1777 in the lower margin.. Original engraved map with folds as issued (Ref: Wheat #172). (Image: 11 ¼ x 15’’ – Paper size: 13 5/8 x 16’’)

This map depicts the Southwestern region of North America from present-day San Francisco in the West, to New Orleans along the Gulf Coast. Topographical features are noted, with major cities, towns, and waterways identified. Indian Tribes (and ruins) are located throughout the map.

North of New Orleans is the note “Natches destroyd” referring to the settlement established by Bienville in 1716, which was destroyed in 1729 by the Natchez Indians who resented the treatment they had received from the French (no attempt was made to reestablish Natchez until 1763).

Texas (Tecas) is marked in the appropriate area, and the location where La Salle landed in 1685 is also noted (he was killed there in 1687). The region east of Santa Fe to Louisiana is marked “Great Space of Land Unknown”. The inset in the lower left depicts Mexico City and environs.

Some offsetting, and staining noted primarily along the upper margin. The sheet  has two archivally closed tears in the upper and middle right margin, not entering to the map area, and three small fold separations along the edges.
