A Short Account Of The Life And Work Of Wynkyn De Worde; With A Leaf From The Golden Legend Printed By Him At The Sign Of The Sun In Fleet Street, London, The Year 1527. 

Limited edition leaf book published by the Book Club of California and printed at the Grabhorn Press, San Francisco, 1949. It contains an original printed leaf (fol. cccxvii) from the GOLDEN LEGEND printed by Wynkyn De Worde in 1527. 

The accompanying text is an interesting account By Robert Grabhorn of William Caxton’s successor, Wynkyn De Worde, and his masterpiece, The Golden Legend, the first printed book in English to contain any portion of the Bible.

The Golden Legend includes the Pentateuch and much of the Gospels. It was the principle source of the Bible in English until the Tyndale Bible was printed. After Caxton’s death De Worde ran the press for forty years, moving it from Westminster to the Sign of the Sun in Fleet Street, London.  

Hardcover, Folio size (13.5” x 9.75”). Limited Edition, One of 375 copies.  

Printed at the Grabhorn Press on fine French handmade paper. [6],15, [1] pages. Cloth spine over decorated paper boards with paper labels to cover and spine. Title page and text in red and black ink. Seven devices of Wynkyn de Worde reproduced on two full pages [10,11] and device on title page and cover label. Decorative initials by Zena Kavin.

With original leaf from Golden Legend printed in double columns tipped-in. The included 1527 leaf contains excerpts from the life of Saint Barbara, and the introduction to Saint Alexis.
