Well-proportioned Redware handled jar with flared rim and wide strap handles extending from the rim to the shoulder. The globular body tapers gracefully to the smaller flat foot. The jar is decorated with a complex geometric pattern of black and red pigment inside the rim and extending past the shoulder to the upper body.
This piece is from the very early pottery tradition found at various archaeological sites along the Yellow River in China. The Yangshao culture was a Chinese Neolithic society named after Yangshao, the first excavated site which was discovered in 1921 in Mianchi County, Henan Province by the Swedish geologist Johan Gunnar Andersson (1874–1960). The culture flourished mainly in the provinces of Henan, Shaanxi and Shanxi.
A finely crafted article of utilitarian ware reflecting the skill of Chinese artisans at an early period, about 4000 years ago.
In very nice condition - nicely preserved pigment and motifs, with minor chipping and surface deposits.
