Original leaf from the Biblia Latina, Testamenti Novi. Printed on hand-made paper in Paris, c. 1563 by Hieronymum de Marnef.  (115 x 78 mm, 4 1/2 x 3 inches) 

The woodcuts in this Bible were executed by the Master Bernard Salomon (1506-61)the famed Lyonnaise mannerist of the Fontainebleau School.

The elaborate woodcut engraving depicts Christ confronting the Pharisees.  

This leaf contains  Matthew 12:10 - 32: '''Et ecce…''' (And behold there was a man who had a withered hand, and they asked him, saying: Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath days…It is lawful to do a good deed on the Sabbath days…Then was offered to him one possessed with a devil, blind and dumb: and he healed him…The Pharisees hearing it, said: This man casteth not out devils but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.  And Jesus knowing their thoughts, said to them: Every kingdom divided against itself shall be made desolate: and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand. And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself: how then shall his kingdom stand? If I by the Spirit of God cast out devils, then is the kingdom of God come upon you…He that is not with me, is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth. …).
