"Georgetown and the City of Washington..." c 1860 Johnson

$0.00

“Colton’s GEORGETOWN AND THE CITY OF WASHINGTON THE CAPITAL OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.” New York: Johnson and Browning, c. 1860. Lithographed map with original hand-coloring. (Image: 12 ¾  x 15 ¾ ’’)

Although the map is dated 1855, it was actually published by Johnson & Browning in 1860 following their acquisition of Colton. They still retained the Colton title, adding only their name as publishers (this changed with the 1861 atlas).

This map, published just one year prior to the onset of the Civil War, depicts the Capital City and Georgetown. Major buildings and streets are identified.

Also included are vignettes of the “SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION”, “THE CAPITOL” (showing the enlarged building with the new iron dome completed - though it was not finished until the end of the Civil War) and “WASHINGTON MONUMENT” (the proposed version - not completed until 1884!).  An interesting view of the capital prior to the onset of the Civil War.
