“CARTE DES LACS DU CANADA...” Jean Nicholas Bellin (hydrographer to Louis XV). Amsterdam: from Histoire Generale des Voyages, published by Harrevelt and Changuion, 1774.  Original engraved map with folds as issued. Reference: Ref: Kershaw #956-57; Tooley (MCC-96) #871; Portinaro & Knirsch, pl. CXXVI. (Image : 7 7/3 x 11 1/8’’)

This map depicts all five of the Great Lakes as well as portions of adjacent Indian lands, and English colonies of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York.

Topographical features are shown and Indian villages, cities, towns, missions, forts, and waterways are located. Based on Bellin’s earlier 1744 and 1755 maps, which were greatly based on work of French fur trader & explorer Sieur la Verendrve, and explorer-missionary Father Pierre de Charlevoix.

Bellin was one of the first to depict four fictitious islands in Lake Superior (Pontchartrain, Maurepas, Pilippeux, and St. Anne). He was also among the earliest to identify Detroit and the Port of Chicago. Michigan is shown a bit skewed, with a massive mountain range running down the center.
