$1,200.00

“AFRICA…” Augsburg: Matthias Seutter, c. 1735. Engraved map with original hand-coloring. (Ref: Norwich, #80 – illustrated). (Image: 19 ¼ x 22 ¼ ’’)

This attractive map depicts the African continent with regions named and in contrasting colors. Topographical features are well shown and cities, towns, waterways, mountains, forests, deserts, and islands are identified.Tthe Island of Madagascar and most of the Arabian peninsula are also depicted.

The Nile is shown originating in the south at lakes Zaire & Zaflan, and continuing further south. Also of interest are the large lakes in Central Africa and the fictitious information pertaining to deep interior and the southern extremity.

The highly decorative title cartouche shows native inhabitants, pyramids, animals (including a crocodile, lion, snakes, and a winged dragon), a lighthouse and ship at sea.

An attractive and decorative example in very fine condition of an early 18th century map of Africa, with a strong strike and rich old color.
