Engraved map, with folds as issued, and later hand-coloring. There is a closed tear in left margin, extending just into the “o” of “Cahoe Island.”

This highly historical & scarce map illustrates the Harbor & Plan of St. Louis. Surveyed by then 30-year-old Lt. Robert E. Lee. Very detailed - the most accurate map of the St Louis enviorons to date!

The City Plan is shown, with major streets identified. Outside the city several Indian Mounds, Mills, and Lime Kilns are located. The Mississippi is shown with soundings and distances marked. Additional notes regarding the river are provided in the lower left.

Lee (1807-70) distinguished himself at West Point - graduating #2 in his class of 1829. He was made assistant of the Chief Engineer’s Office 1834-37; appointed 1st Lt. of Engineers in 1836; “his first important independent assignment came in July 1837, as Superintending Engineer for St. Louis harbor and the upper Mississippi and Missouri Rivers” (Dictionary of American Biography).
