This handsome map depicts the New State of Kansas (admitted 1861), and Territories of Nebraska (admitted 1867), Colorado (admitted 1876) & the eastern portion of  Idaho Territory (created in 1863, briefly extending eastward through present-day Montana and Wyoming). Counties are in contrasting colors and topographical features shown. 

The Pony Express Route is shown (following the Platte River) and Santa Fe Route shown from Santa Fe to the edge of Missouri. The “Gold Region” surrounding Denver City is noted.  Indian Tribes and “ancient ruins” are located throughout the map. Major towns, cities, rail routes, land and water routes are identified and exploratory routes delineated. 

Also of note:  the Black Hills region in “Dacotah Territory” is shown where in just a few years (1875) gold would be discovered & Indian Wars would commence (Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876).
