“GENERAL MAP OF CHARLESTON HARBOR SOUTH CAROLINA Showing Rebel Defences and Obstructions...1865” Washington: Government Printing Office, 1865. Color-lithographed map with original color. (Image: 21 3/4 x 24 3/4'')

Issued folded  and with archivally closed tear upper left margin. Published by the U. S. Coast Survey Office.  Produced under direction of Rear Admiral J.A. Dalgren, USN commanding South Atlantic Blockading Squadron, by C. O. Boutelle Assis. US Coast Survey.

This is possibly the best map of Charleston Harbor produced during the Civil War!  It extends to include Forts Shaw, Marshall, Sumter, Wagner and Johnson, plus many batteries.  Charleston is shown as a detailed street grid.  The Table, lower left, details the Armament of Rebel Forts and notes explain the various symbols on the map.

Surveys of the shore line, channels, & fortifications with the location of Union & Rebel Batteries are shown in color.  Positions of shipwrecks, obstructions, & torpedoes - including the Housatonic, Keokuk, Flamingo & many more are detailed. Tracks of numerous torpedoes are also depicted.  Many interesting notes are provided including one giving the position of Ironsides as it lay over a 2,000 pound torpedo for "one hour" on April 7th, 1863.

“The work of the Coast Survey not only resulted in the most accurate charts possible of the coastal waters of the nation…it also pioneered the modern techniques and equipment utilized by later surveys in the interior” (Martin & Martin).
