This very scarce, separately issued, large folding map was published just months before the 1850 Compromise. It depicts the United States and its Territories in contrasting colors.
Beneath the title is a vignette of President Washington and in the Gulf of Mexico a view of the “Capitol of Washington”. The map extends to show Central America to below Panama City and part of the West Indies to Haiti.
The map's unusual projection emphasizes the western portion of the U.S and the interesting territorial configurations of the pre-Civil War period. It depicts the large "stove-pipe" Texas with the boundaries it had during the Republic Era (continuing along the Rio Grande northward to the Arkansas River in present-day Colorado).
Indian Territory is in a rarely seen "tomahawk" shape. A large Oregon Territory occupies the entire Northwest & extends to the Continental Divide.
California extends from Texas to the Pacific Ocean. Most of these territorial and state boundaries, including the Territories of Missouri and Minnesota, would change drastically within a few years. The US border between New Mexico Territory & Mexico would change with the Gadsden Purchase of 1853.
