Original leaf from a medieval manuscript Book of Hours. 18  lines of text, ruled in red, written in Latin with dark brown ink & red rubrics in fine gothic script on animal vellum. (158 x 112mm – 6 ¼ x 4 3/8’’)

Two illuminated two-line initials in burnished gold on red and blue ground with delicate white penwork; eleven illuminated one-line initials alternating in deep blue with delicate red penwork and burnished gold with delicate violet penwork.

Flanders (Use of Sarum), c. 1450 – produced to follow the English rites, for the English market. The Litany of the Saints from this book listed several Saints associated with Britain, including George (patron of Britain), Swithin (Bishop of Westminster), Eusebius (martyred Irish Benedictine), Burinus (Apostle of Wessex), and Julian (early English Martyr).

The one-line illuminated “D” begins Psalm 120 (King James 121) 7-8: “Dominus…” (The Lord keepeth thee from all evil: may the Lord keep thy soul.  May the Lord keep thy coming in and thy going out; from henceforth now and forever).

The two-line illuminated “L” begins Psalm 121 (KJ 122) complete: “Letatus…” (I rejoiced at the things that were said to me: We shall go into the house of the Lord…Because of the house of the Lord our God, I have sought good things for thee).

The two-line illuminated “A” begins Ecclesiasticus (KJ Sirach) 24:14: “Ab initio…” (From the beginning, and before the world, was I created, and unto the world to come I shall not cease to be, and in the holy dwelling place I have ministered before him).
