(Image: 15 x 12’’)  “A New Map of MAINE” Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell, c. 1847 (dated).   Engraved map with original hand coloring from the 1847 issue of Mitchell's "New Universal Atlas".  Excellent condition with bright color.

This map depicts Maine with its counties named and in contrasting colors, and topographical features shown.  Major towns, cities, and mountains are located and stage routes, railroads and canal routes are identified.

Several boundary lines are shown (“Boundary Line of 1842”, “Boundary according to the Treaty of 1783”, “ Line claimed by Great Britain”, “Line as Proposed by the King of the Netherlands”…). Post Offices, “Acadian Settlements”, “Indian Township” and coastal islands are also located.

The inset lists the population as of 1830 and 1840 for the counties and major towns. An additional list shows the change in population for the whole state from 1765 to 1840. An excellent view of the state as it existed prior to the Civil War!
